Notes: The SO (Sergei Qrdzhonikidze), named after the Politburo member and nicknamed Sergo, was designed as an intermediate type between the E family and the FD . By fitting a leading truck to the type E chassis, riding qualities were much improved and a bigger boiler could be used. They were originally built as S017 (17 t. axle-load), S018 (18 t., with smokebox fan), and Sok 19 (s kondensatsiei para - condensing), but the 18- and 19-tonne variants were rebuilt as standard S017 in about 1955-56. The later SOm and SOn designations refer to mechanical stoking and oil-firing respectively. Approximate factory deliveries to the MPS were: Kharkov- 1469; Bryansk- 674; Lugansk- 1399; Ulan Ude - 574; and Krasnoyarsk - 288. Some 2,407 (837 active) were in MPS stock in 1967 and 815 (101 active) in 1977, while 19 remained active in January 1992. (Technical data given above is for 1947-type engines.)
